Calm vs Chaos
This great window display was created by the merchandisers at Ballantynes in Christchurch. VM Stephanie Stevens sourced her own props and interpreted one of the themes we had adopted for our Winter collection - Calm vs Chaos. The graphic artwork was created by our very own Emma.
Most of Christchurch city centre was so badly damaged due to the devastating earthquake last Feb (2011) that the city pretty much closed down.
Ballantynes reopened at the end of October last year as part of the Restart project, which included the ‘container mall’ in Cashel St, and they have been doing fantastically well since then. Ballantynes is a real institution in Christchurch, so it was a really positive move to have them be one of the first to reopen in the CBD.

Oh baby!
meow!
We have a few die-hard cat lovers in the design team. With winter fast approaching, I thought they might like to include this jumper as an essential part of their winter wardrobe.

OH.NO.SUMO + STAIRWAY THEATRE
Auckland based experimental design collective OH.NO.SUMO are ready to launch their Stairway Cinema this Thursday in collaboration with St Paul St Gallery (delayed from last month so dates below don't apply). They will be showing video clips compiled and contributed, bringing the cinema to the street and running until the 28th of April.
If their previous installations are anything to go by this will not disappoint!
Check out their Cupcake Pavillion and Paper Sky below..

Check out their Cupcake Pavillion and Paper Sky below..
OH.NO.SUMO sold cupcakes out of a cardboard pavilion set up in Britomart Square in 2009 for Auckland Architecture Week raising money for Starship Children's Hospital. They sold out in just 90 minutes, much to my son's disappointment when we went in for an after school treat... |
Collaborating with Poggenpohl Kitchens and Spicers Paper OH.NO.SUMO created this 'paper sky' for the Urbis Design Day 2010 |

Today on my cyber travels I stumbled across these fab phone accessories - so whimsical and imagination-capturing it almost makes me want to get an iphone just to put inside them!

Correction
The retail price of our Pheasant apron was misprinted in the latest issue of Your Home & Garden.
Its actual retail price is $29.00 not $255 (holy moly!!)

Master Upholsters
Emma and I have just completed our first term of a Beginners Upholstery class. Our first projects were simple stools - before and after photos are above. We both feel quite proud of our efforts - and of mastering the mighty staple gun - and look forward to more classes next term.

Marwari Horses
Last night while watching an episode of the documentary series Under the Spell of Horses (see a sneak peek at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl0GOdxAvDM) I made a new (to me) discovery: the majestic and utterly mesmerising Marwari horses of Rajasthan, India.
Sleek, proud and elegant, they are revered as divine and are loved for their bravery and loyalty. Apart from their strong bodies, slim stomachs and proud heads, the most surprising and distinctive (and incredibly endearing) characteristic is their ears! The tips curve over so that when the ears are pricked forward the tips touch to form an arch.
It's always so exciting to discover a new aspect to something you already previously loved!
If you'd like to find out more I recommend watching the DVD (you can rent it from the library) or try these:
